FOURTEEN
Leonardo was almost out of days â and ways â to fix it. His mother had given him four, and on the evening of the third, she cornered him before dinner. "Do you know what you're doing?" she asked, arms crossed over her chest, and a suspicious look in her eyes that told him that, as much as she loved him, she also thought him useless.
He'd tried everything he could think of, especially after Johnny's request. Last night, he'd spent the entirety of the night drinking with a lowlife that worked with the Lancasters in Rome and knew where they stayed. He'd ended up several thousands of euros poorer, and no closer to actually remedying things. His informant of sorts had only informed him that the Lancasters didn't trust him or the Bianchi, or the way they did business.
"You blew it that day at the Grand Circus. Someone in the family had thought you were ingenious, but nowâ¦" the woman trailed off, after downing another particularly expensive shot of whisky. "They were going to close it with the Casa Ricci, but somehow that was boosted too. I think it was a family drama. But at least they don't think the Ricci are fools like they think of you."
That would have been enough to set him, make his fingers tickle with the desire to shoot a gun and see blood. But that still had been early in the night, and he'd thought there would still be more information he could get from the woman. There hadn't been. So he'd been insulted and she'd walked away unwounded.
And freshly drunk off the Bianchi's money.
At least Chiara had made good on her promise and made sure her brother couldn't close the deal with the Lancasters either. Which meant they were probably getting ready to leave Italy, and without all the ecstasy they'd hoped for. A request that big could only mean they had big plans in mind, so perhaps they could still be persuaded. But that was a big maybe.
His mother was right about him: he was useless. He'd hardly slept at all in the morning, and during the day, he'd tried calling Johnny, but Johnny had probably been at the hospital, the calls not even completing.
It was bullshit, all of it.
He felt as if he was going to explode.
"I know what I'm doing," he told his mom, flashing her a charming smile. She touched his arm warningly, glancing down at his middle where the stitches still pierced through his skin. "Relax, Ma. I got this."
She studied him for another second.
For what felt like the thousandth time, Leonardo hated his brother and the phantom he'd left behind.
Then he persisted on his smile until his mother was quietly patting his arm, and they both entered the dining room together, side by side, like a united front meeting their common ally: Andrea Bianchi, sitting behind a large chair that much resembled a throne.
The man had dark green eyes and a perfectly trimmed black beard. Two constants about him were that he always dressed impeccably, and his thick eyebrows always looked judgmental.
